A new program at Lake Superior College (LSC) is about to take off.

LSC has announced that it will offer an Aviation Maintenance Technician program this fall.  The regional community and technical college’s new program was recently certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), opening the door to the new training program.

“We have developed this program in response to the workforce needs of Duluth’s growing aviation sector and our local industry partners,” said Dr. Patrick Johns, LSC’s president.  “FAA approval of the program represents the culmination of nearly a decade work by faculty, staff and administration.”

The college plans to accept its first class to begin this fall semester, when classes resume on August 25. The 103-credit program was developed following FAA guidelines. It includes lab-intensive training in general, airframe and power plant maintenance.

“It’s a tight timeline to enroll our first class but we know that there is a great deal of interest in aviation maintenance as a career.  Local employers like AAR and Cirrus Aircraft are actively recruiting certified airframe and power plant mechanics. There are local jobs that need to be filled if the industry is to continue growing in the region,” Johns explained.  “We plan to establish a program that will provide a reliable local source of well-trained aviation maintenance technicians.”

Locally, both Cirrus and AAR have been aggressively recruiting qualified technicians.

Initially, the program will be housed on LSC’s Trinity Road campus.  The college plans to relocate the program to facilities at the Duluth International Airport as soon as appropriate facilities can be developed to house LSC’s Center for Advanced Aviation, which also includes Professional Pilot and Aviation Management programs.
